Meet Mia Leong, LM, CPM

Home Birth Midwife & Founder of Rowan Birth Services

People often ask why I became a midwife. The answer is both simple and deeply personal. My path to becoming a Certified Professional Midwife has taken me to unexpected places, and each one has shaped the way I care for families today. Long before I attended births, I was drawn to caring for people through life's important transitions. My background as a Montessori teacher taught me that every person is different and deserves to be met with patience, curiosity, and respect. Those lessons have never left me. In many ways, they became the foundation of how I practice midwifery.

My Path to Midwifery

My own experiences with home birth changed the course of my life.

With the support of my husband and the midwives who would later accept me as their student, I gave birth to both of my children at home. Those experiences helped lead me first to work as a doula and eventually to pursue the extensive education, apprenticeship, and hands-on clinical training required to become a Certified Professional Midwife (CPM).

Becoming a midwife isn't something I did alone. Throughout my training, my family supported the long hours, studying, births, and unpredictability that come with learning this work. Experienced midwives welcomed me as a student and gave me the opportunity to develop skills that can't be learned from books alone.

That combination of education, mentorship, hands-on experience, and family support allowed me to step fully into the work I felt called to do.

My Approach to Birth

I believe deeply in evidence-based care, informed consent, and preserving normal physiologic birth. Pregnancy and birth are normal life events that deserve careful observation, skilled support, and thoughtful intervention when — and to the extent that — it is truly needed. I also believe excellent midwifery means being prepared for the unexpected.

Home birth is appropriate for carefully selected, low-risk pregnancies. My role is to support normal birth while remaining attentive to the well-being of both parent and baby and recognizing when circumstances require additional care or collaboration. For me, these aren't opposing philosophies.

Trusting birth and being clinically prepared belong together.

Care Built on Relationship & Trust

Midwifery is about more than clinical care. It's about relationship. I want you to have time to ask questions. I want you to understand your options. I want you to feel comfortable telling me what matters to you, what worries you, and what you're hoping for from your experience.

That relationship begins during pregnancy and continues through labor, birth, and the postpartum period. By the time I arrive at your home during labor, I don't want to feel like a stranger walking through your door. I want you to feel like someone who knows you, understands your preferences, and respects your family has arrived to care for you.

Your Birth Story Belongs to You

One of the greatest privileges of being a midwife is being invited into a family's home during one of the most meaningful moments of their lives. I sometimes describe myself as the sidekick to the main character in your story. Because this isn't my birth. It's yours. My role isn't to take over your experience. It's to bring the knowledge, clinical skills, observation, preparation, and support that allow you to remain at the center of your own care.

It's a responsibility I never take lightly. Whether your birth unfolds exactly as you imagined or takes a less expected path, my intention is that you feel respected, informed, supported, and genuinely cared for every step of the way.
