Home Birth & Midwifery Care
Personalized care through pregnancy, birth, newborn care, and postpartum
Home birth is about much more than where your baby is born. It’s about the relationship you have with the person caring for you throughout pregnancy, labor, birth, and the postpartum period.
At Rowan Birth Services, Mia Leong, LM, CPM provides comprehensive home birth midwifery care for families throughout Northern New Jersey, including Bergen, Passaic, Morris, Essex, Sussex, and surrounding counties.
Care is individualized, unhurried, and grounded in informed choice. You’ll have time to ask questions, understand your options, discuss the evidence behind recommendations, and make decisions that feel right for you and your family.

What Is a Home Birth Midwife?
A home birth midwife is a trained healthcare provider who specializes in caring for people throughout pregnancy, labor, birth, and the postpartum period, including families planning to welcome their baby at home.
As a Certified Professional Midwife (CPM) and Licensed Midwife (LM), Mia is trained in both the art and science of normal, physiologic birth.
Her role is to monitor the health and well-being of parent and baby, support the body’s natural processes, recognize when something falls outside the range of normal, and provide evidence-based guidance throughout your care.
Home birth midwifery combines clinical care, education, emotional support, and continuity of care. At Rowan Birth Services, you have the opportunity to build a relationship with your midwife throughout pregnancy that continues through birth and the postpartum period.
Midwifery care may include:
Comprehensive prenatal care and routine lab work
Individualized education and birth preparation
Continuous presence and monitoring during labor and birth
Immediate newborn assessment
Breastfeeding and feeding support
Postpartum care in your home
Newborn care and screening
Referrals and collaboration with other medical providers when needed

What to Expect From Your Care
Every pregnancy is different, which means care shouldn’t feel one-size-fits-all.
Mia’s approach begins with listening. Prenatal appointments allow time for conversation, not just measurements and paperwork. You’ll be encouraged to ask questions, talk through concerns, learn about your options, and participate actively in decisions about your care.
Families choosing Rowan Birth Services can expect:
Unhurried, relationship-centered prenatal visits
Respect for informed choice and shared decision-making
Evidence-based care grounded in current research and physiologic birth
Continuity of care throughout pregnancy, birth, and postpartum
A calm, supportive presence during labor
Individualized education and birth preparation
Care that recognizes pregnancy as both a normal physiologic process and a profound life transition
Prenatal Care
Prenatal visits with Rowan Birth Services are scheduled for a full hour, allowing time to care for the whole person — physically, emotionally, and nutritionally. Visits follow a typical obstetric schedule. You’ll generally meet monthly until the third trimester, then every other week until your 36-week home visit. After the home visit, appointments return to the office weekly until labor begins. During prenatal care, Mia monitors the health of you and your baby through standard assessments, routine lab work, and ongoing conversation.
Your visits also provide time to discuss nutrition, movement, common pregnancy discomforts, preparing for labor and birth, newborn care, breastfeeding, and any questions or concerns that arise along the way. Childbirth education is incorporated into your care and tailored to your individual needs and preferences.
Partners, children, and other family members are welcome to participate in prenatal visits if you’d like them involved.
Labor & Home Birth
When labor becomes progressive, Mia comes to your home and remains with you throughout your birth and for several hours afterward. Her role is to support normal physiologic labor while continually observing and monitoring the well-being of you and your baby. Mia brings clinical tools and emergency medications appropriate to her scope of practice, along with the familiarity that comes from caring for you throughout your pregnancy.
At home, you’re encouraged to move freely, eat and drink to maintain your strength, and labor in the environment and rhythm that feel most comfortable to you. Doula support is encouraged, and you decide who you would — or would not — like present during your birth. After your baby is born, Mia performs a newborn assessment and continues monitoring both you and your baby. Normal postpartum and newborn care can take place right in the comfort of your own home.
Postpartum & Newborn Care
Your relationship with your midwife doesn’t end once your baby is born. During the first postpartum week, Mia returns to your home at least twice to assess both you and your baby. You’ll also remain in contact by phone each day during that first week. An additional second-week visit is available as needed, and care continues for you and your baby through six weeks postpartum.
Care during this period focuses on:
Physical healing and recovery
Emotional well-being
Breastfeeding and feeding support
Newborn adjustment
Parent education
Routine newborn care
Questions and concerns as your family adjusts
When you’re ready to transition your baby’s care to a pediatrician, Mia can provide records of the newborn care already received.
Safety & Emergency Preparedness
Planning a home birth also means preparing for the unexpected. Certified Professional Midwives are educated in normal physiologic birth and emergency skills. Mia carries medications and equipment for stabilization, maintains emergency protocols, and collaborates with hospitals, physicians, and other medical professionals when a higher level of care is appropriate.
Safety, emergency preparedness, and the possibility of hospital transfer are important conversations to have before choosing home birth. Rowan Birth Services provides families with information about these possibilities so they can make informed decisions about their care.
Scope of Midwifery Care
As a Certified Professional Midwife, Mia is trained and equipped to provide:
Mia’s Philosophy of Care
Mia believes birth is a significant life event and pregnancy is a natural, transformative process. Her approach blends clinical skill with intuitive, individualized support, creating an environment where safety and serenity can coexist.
Home birth midwifery isn’t about doing less. It’s about providing the care that’s needed with mindfulness, respect, education, and trust — while giving families an active voice in their experience.
